Sebastião Salgado

Brazilian photographer, born 1944
BiographySalgado is a Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist. Trained as an economist, Salgado was working for the International Coffee Organization and traveling to Africa on missions for the World Bank when he began to photograph seriously. He abandoned his career as an economist and became a photographer full time in 1973. Salgado is best known for the in-depth documentary projects that he publishes in book form. He is particularly famous for his photographs of famine in Ethiopia and the Serra Pelada gold mine in Brazil. His work is widely exhibited in art museums and galleries.
