Renowned photojournalist Peter Turnley has had his work on the cover of Newsweek 43 times. He’s a photojournalist in the tradition of Robert Capa and Robert Doisneau, the latter for whom he worked as an assistant. Turnley has spent much of his life traveling to tumultuous regions and documenting the major events and everyday street life there. He studied at University of Michigan and the Sorbonne and has an Honorary Doctorate degree from the New School of Social Research in New York. Turnley’s photographs have been featured in Newsweek, Harper’s, Paris Match, LIFE, National Geographic, Le Monde, and The New Yorker, but he is most closely associated with Newsweek and Harper’s Magazine. His work is frequently published in photo essay form in magazines and on major television networks such as CNN and ABC’s “Nightline.” Turnley’s photographs have won international awards including the Overseas Press Club Award for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, numerous awards and citations from World Press Photo, and the University of Missouri’s Pictures of the Year competition. Turnley’s work was featured (with his twin brother’s) in the exhibition, In Times of War and Peace at New York’s International Center of Photography in 1996.
