Garry Winogrand

Born in the Bronx, Winogrand is best known for his documentary series which appeared as books, including The Animals (1969), Women are Beautiful (1975), and Public Relations (1977). Winogrand studied painting at City College of New York and painting and photography at Columbia University. In the early 1960s he photographed the streets of New York. In 1955 two of his works appeared in The Family of Man at the Museum of Modern Art, and in the 1960s his photographs appeared in significant museum exhibitions at MoMA and the George Eastman House. Winogrand received three Guggenheim Fellowships and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, allowing him to travel the nation taking thousands of rolls of film. Winogrand died unexpectedly at age 56, leaving behind thousands of undeveloped rolls of film and nearly 300,000 unedited images.
