BiographyRalph Gibson is a very well respected American photographer, known for his attention to formal elements within documentary photographs. He studied photography in the U.S. Navy and at the San Francisco Art Institute before working as an assistant to Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank. He is represented in most major museums that collect photography, and he has won many awards, including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Award, the Lucie Award, an Eastman Kodak Grant for L’Histoire de France, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985, and NEA Fellowships in 1973 and 1975.
