David Budd

American painter and sculptor, 1926–1991

BiographyDavid Budd was born in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1926 and studied first in the School of Architecture at the University of Florida in Gainesville and subsequently at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota. Budd's monochromatic, abstract work aligns with both Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting of the second half of the twentieth century. The artist moved to New York in 1952 where he studied briefly at the Arts Students League. Budd's first solo exhibition was held in 1956 at American University, and in 1958, he began to show at Betty Parsons Gallery. The artist returned to New York in 1970 following a decade of living abroad in Paris. Back in the United States, Budd taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York and received fellowships and awards throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His work is included in the public collections of the High Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
