Esteban Vicente

Spanish-American painter, 1903–2001
BiographyAbstract expressionist painter Esteban Vincente was born in Spain in 1903 and studied in Madrid at the School of Fine Arts of the Real Academia de San Fernando. Vincente immigrated to New York in 1936 and was immersed in the New York School of painting that included Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, among others. He taught at the Black Mountain College, the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture, and the University of California, Berkeley. Vincente's work is in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, among others, and in 1998, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vincente opened in Segovia, Spain in his honor.
