Jerry Farnsworth

American painter and teacher, 1895–1983
BiographyClosely associated with Provincetown, Massachusetts, Jerry Farnsworth ran the Farnsworth School of Art in nearby North Truro. He was a portrait and figure painter, whose commissions included covers for Time magazine in the 1930s. He studied at the Corcoran School of Art and Design with Charles Hawthorne. Farnsworth married artist Helen Sawyer. Starting in 1943, they ran an art school in Sarasota, Florida, as well as the one in Provincetown, which had been founded in the early 1930s. A retrospective exhibition of his work was organized by the Truro Historical Society in Massachusetts in 2004.
