Margery Austen Ryerson

Ryerson is best known for her sensitive portrayals of children. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, Ryerson studied with Charles Hawthorne at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and with Robert Henri at the Art Students League in New York. In 1923 she published The Art Spirit, a book of Henri's teachings that has remained continously in print. For about 20 years (c.1920–1940), Ryerson taught at settlement houses in New York and found many of her subjects there. Ryerson exhibited regularly in New York galleries and in exhibitions throughout the nation. Some of her prints were distributed by Associated American Artists.
