Marilyn Levine

Canadian and American sculptor, 1935–2005

BiographyOriginally a Canadian chemist, Marilyn Levine turned to art as a career in 1968, moving from Regina to Berkeley, California. After studying sculpture with Peter Voulkos at the University of California, Berkeley, Levine became known for her trompe l'oeil works of pottery that resembled objects such as handbags and garments. Aside from her career as a working artist, she taught art at Berkeley, the University of Utah, and the University of Saskatchewan. Her work is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and she received a Louise and Adolph Schwenk Memorial Prize for Sculpture in 1969.
