Jack LevineAmerican painter and printmaker, 1915–2010

Jack Levine was a gifted draftsman and a socially committed artist who often employed elements satire and caricature in the cause of social commentary. Born in Boston, Levine studied painting at Harvard University from 1929 to 1933 and soon found work with the W.P.A.'s Federal Art Project in Boston. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 and traveled to Europe in 1947, deepening his understanding of the Old Masters whose work he preferred to most modern artists. In the 1960s he turned to printmaking and began to explore Biblical themes in his paintings and prints.
