William T. Wiley was part of a group of artists working in northern California in the early 1960s producing what was described as Funk art. Wiley was born in Bedford, Indiana in 1937 and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute. The artist began teaching in 1968, first at the University of Colorado at Boulder and later at the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of California, Berkeley. Wiley exhibited and received many awards and prizes and had solo exhibitions of his work at the de Young Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Walker Art Center, among others. Wiley is represented in numerous corporate, private, and public collections throughout the United States and abroad.
