John W. McCoy

American painter, 1910–1989
BiographyBorn in California, John McCoy relocated with his family to Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Fine Arts, studied in France for one year, and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He completed his training in N.C. Wyeth's studio, where he worked alongside Andrew and met his future wife Ann Wyeth. Like the rest of the Wyeth family, McCoy split time between Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and Maine. McCoy taught at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1946 to 1961. He painted landscapes in tempera, watercolor, and oil paint, before developing a unique, mixed media approach.
