Andrew Wyeth
BiographyAmerican painter Andrew Wyeth was the son of the illustrator N.C. Wyeth. He was raised in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he maintained a home and studio throughout his life, and trained by his father. At age 20 Wyeth had his first solo show at the prestigious Macbeth Gallery in New York. The entire inventory of watercolors sold out. Despite his facility with watercolor, he had his brother-in-law Peter Hurd teach him egg tempera painting and rapidly achieved success in this demanding medium. In 1948, he painted Christina's World, which was purchased almost immediately by Alfred Barr for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Wyeth divided his time between Chadds Ford and Cushing, Maine, gaining fame for his pictures of the characteristic architecture, flora, and individuals he found in these places.
