Frank Stella

American painter, 1936–2024
BiographyFrank Stella was born in 1936 in Malden, Massachusetts, attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, and studied painting and history at Princeton University. He moved to New York in 1958 and is best known for his minimalist paintings created in response to the legacy of Abstract Expressionism in the city. He joined Leo Castelli's gallery in 1959, created shaped canvases throughout the 1960s, and began printmaking in great earnest in the early 1970s. Stella's public sculptures and later paintings took on a more maximalist approach beginning in the 1970s. The artist is included in major corporate and public collections throughout the United States and abroad, and his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
