Joseph Cornell

American sculptor and filmmaker, 1903–1972
BiographyJoseph Cornell was an American artist, sculptor, and filmmaker best known for his assemblage boxes filled with found objects. Cornell graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Maryland in 1921 and lived in Flushing, New York from 1929 until his death in 1972. The artist's assembled boxes align with surrealist trends, combining disparate images and objects together in mysterious and intriguing ways.
