Charles Hinman was born in Syracuse, New York in 1932 and received his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University in 1955. He continued studies at the Art Students League in New York and following service in the Army, taught at the Staten Island Academy and the Woodmere Academy on Long Island. Hinman developed his first shaped canvases in the early 1960s and began receiving attention for his work when exhibiting at Sidney Janis Gallery in 1964. Hinman has held teaching positions at Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts in New York, Princeton University, the University of Georgia, and the Art Students League. His works that fuse sculpture and painting are held in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Los Angeles County Museum, among others. Hinman is the recipient of numerous awards including grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2012.
