Larry Stark was born in 1940 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He studied art at Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan, and he began extensive work in printmaking. Stark's first exhibition was held at the Mandrake Gallery in San Francisco and later shows followed at Feigen Graphics and the Addison Gallery of American Art. In 1972, he exhibited his print portfolio, The United States of American in the Early 1970s, at Castelli Graphics in New York. Stark's fascination with and exploration of the American commercial landscape continued through the 1970s. In the 1980s, the artist turned his focus to agriculture and nature with a series of mezzotints. Stark's recent work explores fishing and its place in American culture and history.
