Robert Blackburn

American artist, teacher, and master printmaker, 1920–2003
BiographyBorn 1920, Robert Hamilton Blackburn was an African-American artist, teacher, and master printmaker. Blackburn studied lithography with Riva Helfond who taught him other printmaking techniques as well. he worked at the Uptown Community Workshop as a monitor, allowing him the opportunity to meet with artists such as Romare Bearden, Aaron Douglas, and Jacob Lawrence.

From 1940 to 1943, Blackburn had a work scholarship to the Art Students League and studied painting with Vaclav Vytlacil and lithography with Will Barnet. In 1947, he established the Printmaking Workshop New York City.
