Born 1954 in France, Sylvie Germain (Covey) began her artistic career majoring in graphic arts in college in Paris. Before settling in New York City in 1977, Covey studied in Balinese in Indonesia and Sumi-e painting in Japan. After her travels, she joined Michael Ponce de Leon's printmaking class at the Art Students League, working as his monitor from 1978 to 1984 and studying with fellow artist, Seong Moy.
Through the years, Covey's work has evolved as she incorporates her exploration of the spiritual and idealistic world. While at Hunter College, she worked in photography with Mark Feldstein and at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, incorporating new teachings into her artistic process. In 2001, Covey became a part of the Fine Arts Department's faculty at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. She has published two books, "Photoshop for Artists" (2012) and "Modern Printmaking" (2016).
