BiographyBorn in Alkmaar, Holland, Kruseman van Elten spent most of his mature career in New York City. He studied landscape painting in Haarlem with Cornelis Lieste, then traveled in Holland, Germany, France and Belgium before coming to the United States in 1865. In New York, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design. His meticulous and atmospheric depictions of the region's landscape in paintings and etchings place him within the Hudson River School tradition.
