Charles Herbert Woodbury (1864–1940) was an artist and teacher, primarily in Boston and Ogunquit, Maine. He also taught at Wellesley College and wrote 3 art education books, leaving a strong influence in that field.
Woodbury came from a well-established family. He sold his first oil painting when he was 15 and at age 17 in 1884, became the youngest person elected to the Boston Art Club. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and credited Ross Turner, his watercolor instructor there, as launching his painting career.
Woodbury married Marcia Oakes (1865-1913) in 1890. In 1890-1891, they studied in Holland and then Paris, Charles at the Académie Julian in Paris with Boulanger and Lefebvre, and Marcia at the Laxar's School.
By 1892, he had set up a studio at 22 School Street in Boston where he painted for the rest of his life. Woodbury belonged to numerous art clubs and won many awards. He regularly exhibited his work in over 60 solo exhibitions. In 1945 the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, held a Woodbury retrospective exhibition. In 1968, Adelson Galleries, Inc. (then of Boston) and in 1978 Vose Galleries of Boston followed with more retrospectives. In 1988 M.I.T. held a major Woodbury exhibition titled Earth, Sea and Sky; it traveled to various museums through 1993.
