American artist, born c.1893 in Hungary
BiographyBorn in Hungary, Karoly was naturalized as an American citizen by the 1930s. Before coming to the United States, he studied at the University of Art and Architeture in Budapest and at the Art Academy in Munich and traveled through Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, and Holland, gathering material for his paintings and etchings. He produced murals for the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago and for Bellevue Hospital in New York. He collaborated with fellow Hungarian-American Louis P. Szanto (1889–1965) on mural commissions in Cleveland after World War II.
