Bertram Hartman

American painter, 1882–1960
BiographyBorn in Junction City, Kansas, Hartman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Royal Academy in Munich. Settling in New York, he illustrated for Judge and the Dial. During the Great Depression, he painted murals and easel paintings for the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. Hartman was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists, the American Watercolor Society, the American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Graphic Artists, and the Mural Painters of America. He exhibited at the Pan-Pacific Exposition of 1915, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Society of Independent Artists, the Carnegie Institute, Corcoran Gallery, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He was represented by Montross Gallery.
