Minnie Lois MurphyAmerican printmaker, 1901–1962
Best known as a printmaker, Murphy was born in Lyons, Kansas. She graduated from Columbia University and studied at the Art Students League with Boardman Robinson and George Grosz. She was active in New York and Provincetown, making lithographs and wood engravings, some of which were published by the WPA in the 1930s. Her style ranged from social realism to modernism influenced by cubism. She showed at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Society of Independent Artists, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Provincetown Art Association, and the Brooklyn Museum, among others. Her prints are in many American museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art.
