Thomas Doughty

Thomas Doughty was an American painter often considered a predecessor to the Hudson River School. Born in Philadelphia, he specialized in peaceful, atmospheric landscapes featuring the rivers and mountains of Pennsylvania, New York, and New England. Doughty taught himself to paint while apprenticing with a leather manufacturer and committed himself to painting professionally in 1820. He published a magazine, the Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports, with his brother John. Doughty lived in Philadelphia, Boston, England, and New York and exhibited regularly at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, and the Boston Athenaeum.
