Niki de Saint Phalle

French-American sculptor, writer, and scenographer, 1930–2002
BiographyNiki de Saint Phalle was born in France in 1930 and grew up in New York City. While recovering in a psychiatric hospital, she began painting and later sculpting. In 1960, the artist met Jean Tinguely, with whom she developed a working and romantic relationship. She is best known today for her assemblages shot with guys and the large, figurative sculptures of the female form, which she called "Nanas."
