Louise NevelsonAmerican sculptor, 1899–1988

A sculptor, draughtswoman, and printmaker, Louise Nevelson was first introduced to Cubism through her study with Hans Hofmann. She incorporated elements of the style into her monochromatic wood assemblages and later in her large-scale outdoor sculpture commissions. In addition to wall-mounted sculpture, she created large indoor and outdoor environments—groups of multiple sculptures installed in one space—such as the Louise Nevelson Plaza, completed in 1979 in New York's financial district.
