George Segal

George Segal was educated in the 1940s in New York and New Jersey, studying at Cooper Union, Rutgers University, Pratt Institute, and SUNY Purchase College. He began as a figurative painter but became quickly involved with the group of artists surrounding Allan Kaprow, many of whom were interested in the creation of assemblages and happenings in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Segal is best known for his haunting environmental tableaux with cast figures places in isolated public and private spaces. The artist created politically-charged public monuments in the 1970s, many of which are in the collections of colleges and universities in the Northeast.
