Pat Steir

American painter, printmaker, and conceptual artist, 1938–2026
BiographyPat Steir was born in Newark, New Jersey, and worked in New York City. She held a Bachelor of Art degree from Boston University and a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Pratt Institute, New York. Steir received numerous grants and awards including two National Endowment for the Arts grants, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and an honorary doctorate from Pratt Institute. Steir combined interests in Minimal and Conceptual art with Abstract Expressionism and Chinese landscape painting. Her work is in the collections of major national and international museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Collection, London, among many others.
