Donald SultanAmerican painter and printmaker, born 1951

Born in Asheville, North Carolina, Donald Sultan received his Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and his Master of Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He moved to New York in 1975 and had his first solo show there in 1977 at Artists Space. In 1979, Sultan was included in the Whitney Biennial. In 1980, he received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and in 1987, had his first one person museum exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Brooklyn Museum. Since the 1980s, Sultan has collaborated on several projects with American author David Mamet. In 2000, he received an honorary doctorate from the Corcoran School of Art, in Washington, D.C. Sultan’s work is included in the collections of The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.
