Sam Gilliam

American artist, 1933–2022
BiographySam Gilliam was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1933 and studied at the University of Louisville receiving his undergraduate degree in 1955 and his master of fine arts degree in 1961. He settled in Washington, DC in the early 1960s and became involved with the Washington Color School, a group of second-generation color field painters. Gilliam began exhibiting in the mid-1960s, and his work was presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His paintings, prints, and installations are in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Phillips Collection, among others.
