Everett Spruce

American painter and printmaker, 1908–2002
BiographyTexas artist Everett Spruce was one of the "Dallas Nine" group and a longtime professor in the Department of Art at University of Texas at Austin. Spruce was raised on a farm near Conway, Arkansas, studied at the Dallas Art Institute, and worked at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts as a young man. While maintaining his strong links to Texas, beginning in the 1930s Spruce exhibited nationally and internationally and was awarded important prizes from museums across the nation. His works are in many public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Dallas Museum of Fine Art, deYoung Museum in San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Museum de Arte Moderno in Rio De Janeiro, the Phillips Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum of American Art New York. He is best known for modernist landscape paintings.
