Isaac SoyerRussian painter and educator, 1902–1981
Isaac Soyer (1902–1981) was born as Isaac Schoar in Russia. The Soyer family was forced to emigrate in 1912 to the United States, where they ultimately settled in the Bronx. The family name changed from Schoar to Soyer during immigration. Isaac Soyer studied at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union, Educational Alliance and studied in Paris and Madrid.He is the younger brother of artists Raphael Soyer and Moses Soyer, and often portrayed working-class people in New York City. Several of his works are in the collections of public museums, such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, and the Dallas Museum of Art.
