Peter Williams taught in the art department at the University of Delaware from 2004 until his death. Peter obtained his master of fine arts degree from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1987 and began teaching that year at Wayne State University in Detroit until moving to Delaware. Throughout his career Peter had an impressive solo and group exhibition schedule. He was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial and is represented in that collection along with the Detroit Institute of the Arts and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
Peter’s practice was directly informed by his examination of contemporary social structures, and he considered his role as an artist equal to that of a documentarian. Peter’s narrative work engages with Pop art aesthetics, political and comic book illustrations from the 1960s and 1970s, the late figurative work of Philip Guston.
