Emmet Gowin

American photographer, born 1941
BiographyBorn in Danville, Virginia, Gowin received his MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied with Harry Callahan. Following his marriage to Edith Morris in 1964, Gowin gained fame for his memorable portraits of her and of other family members. Since the 1980s he has also produced aerial photographs around the world. Gowin taught at the Visual Arts Program at Princeton University for more than 35 years. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Pew Foundation.
