Edwin Roscoe Shrader

American artist and illustrator, 1879–1960

BiographyEdwiin Roscoe Shrader (1879-1960) came to California with his family from his native Illinois when he was a child and began his art studies with William Lees Judson at the University of Southern California. In 1902 he returned to Illinois where he enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for two years. He continued his art training in Delaware with Howard Pyle; he established studios in and near Wilmington. While in the city, he played the cello in the local orchestra.

He was a member of the art colony in New Hope, PA, for three years before settling in Los Angeles in 1917. In that year he became a teacher at the Otis Art Institute and, upon retirement in 1948, was dean of that school.

Shrader had an active career as an illustrator of books and magazines. He was well-known for his Western American subjuects. Later in life, he also took up landscape painting.
