Harry SternbergAmerican printmaker and painter, 1904–2001
Sternberg was born in New York and raised in Brooklyn by orthodox Jewish parents who had immigrated from Russia and Hungary. He began art classes at the Brooklyn Museum as a child and completed his training at the Art Students League in the early 1920s. He painted murals in post offices in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Illinois, and Ambler, Pennsylvania during the Depression. Starting in 1933, he taught at the Art Students League in New York for 35 years. After his retirement in 1966, he moved to Escondido, California, where he continued to make art for more than three decades.
