Edward Weston
BiographyEdward Weston was an influential modern photographer known for his spare, elegant depictions of objects, figures, and details of the landscape. Born in Illinois, Weston moved to California in 1906. He apprenticed with two other photographers before opening his own studio in 1911. His early work was Pictorialist in style, but over time his photographs became more modern. In 1922, he visited New York where he met photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz. The following year he traveled to Mexico with photographer Tina Modotti. In the late 1920s he settled in Carmel, California. In 1937 he was the first photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship. With Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham, he founded Group f/64 which advocated sharply focused, unmanipulated photography.
