A. Allen Lewis

American designer, painter, and illustrator, 1873–1957
BiographyBorn in Mobile, Alabama, Lewis studied with George Bridgman at the Buffalo Art Students League and with Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. He began etching in 1895 and had etchings accepted at the Paris salons starting in 1900. In the early 20th century, Lewis returned to New York, where he specialized in the design of bookplates and became part of the circle of artists and photographers that gathered around Alfred Stieglitz. He exhibited at Stieglitz's gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue and taught at the Art Students League and the New School for Social Research.
