BiographyBest known for his etchings of New York City in the 1920s and 1930s, Martin Lewis was born and raised in Australia and came to the United States in 1900. By 1909 he had settled in New York and was working in commercial illustration, and by 1915 he was producing accomplished etchings. In 1920 he traveled to Japan, and Japanese art would be a major influence on his later work. He produced his most famous etchings between 1925 and 1935. Lewis was a member of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the Chicago Society of Etchers, and the American Water Color Society, and the recipient of many awards for his etchings.
