BiographyWalkowitz was born in Siberia and emigrated to the United States in 1889. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he met Picasso, Matisse, and Gertrude and Leo Stein, the American collectors of European modern art. In 1911 Walkowitz met Alfred Stieglitz through the painter Marsden Hartley and became a fixture in his "291" Gallery. Between 1912 and 1917, Walkowitz executed his most avant-garde works, influenced in part by the works of Kandinsky and other non-objective artists in the Armory Show of 1913. After meeting her in 1906, Walkowitz made hundreds of drawings based on the modern dancer Isadora Duncan.Person TypeIndividual
