BiographyJack Mitchell was best known for his photographs of dancers and celebrities that appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Time, Life, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, and Vogue. Born in Key West, Florida, Mitchell took an early interest in photography, publishing work as a teenager. He worked as a photographer for the Army in Italy at the end of World War II. He began photographing dancers in 1949, eventually becoming the official photographer of the American Ballet Theater and producing more than 160 covers for Dance magazine. He is particularly well known for his photographs of Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
