Reginald Marsh

Reginald Marsh was artistically drawn to the vitality of common life. His favorite subjects were the everyday activities and leisure pursuits of New York's middle and lower classes. The son of two artists, Marsh was born in Paris and raised in New Jersey. He attended Yale University where he was the star illustrator for the college newspaper. After college, Marsh moved to New York to work as an illustrator. He studied painting with John Sloan and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League and was painting seriously by 1923. Marsh was particularly attracted to the seedier entertainments of the city and the shore: he painted burlesque dancers, circus sideshows, and the crowds at Coney Island.
