Thomas Cornell

American artist, 1937–2012

BiographyThomas Cornell received his undergraduate degree from Amherst College in 1959 and studied additionally both at Yale University and with Leonard Baskin at Smith College. He went on to teach at Bowdoin College from 1962 until his retirement in 2012. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation, membership in the National Academy of Design, and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, Cornell is represented in public collections throughout the United States including the National Gallery of Art, High Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Throughout his career, Cornell remained dedicated to civil rights and the environment, exploring those themes in his paintings and meticulous etchings and lithographs.
