Laurie Hogin

BiographyLaurie Hogin is well known and celebrated for her allegorical paintings of mutant plants and animals in the guise of classical still life and landscape paintings. She has investigated human emotions and social conditions, such as consumer culture, and the adverse effects of industries, like fashion, on the environment throughout her work. Hogin holds an undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her master of fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has served as chair of the painting and sculpture program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 2012. Hogin utilizes a vibrant color palette and technically-detailed painting, often hiding messages within her compositions. Her references to historic painting, particularly 17th-century Dutch still life, often points of recognition and critique.
