Henry Koerner

Austrian-born American painter and graphic designer, 1915–1991
BiographyHenry Koerner was born and raised by Jewish parents in Vienna and he attended art school there. When Hitler annexed Austria, Koerner fled to the United States, settling in New York. He worked as a commercial artist and designed posters for the Office of War Information. After the war, Koerner gained attention for his Magic Realist paintings. He showed with Midtown Galleries and settled in Pittsburgh. From 1955 to 1967 he painted more than 50 covers for Time magazine, especially portraits.
