Carrie Mae Weems

American artist, born 1953
BiographyCarrie Mae Weems was born in Portland, Oregon in 1953. Considered one of the most important American artists working today, Weems investigates race, family relationships, class, sociopolitical issues, cultural identity, and the consequences of power through her multimedia practice. She is most celebrated as a photographer, received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2013, and was the first African American woman to have a retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum.

Weems received her BFA at California Institute of the Arts and her MFA at the University of California, San Diego. She has received numerous awards, grants, and fellowships and participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad.
