Eric Fischl

American painter and sculptor, born 1948
BiographyEric Fischl was born in New York City in 1948 and attended Phoenix College before completing his bachelor of fine arts degree from California Institute for the Arts in 1972. In 1974, he moved to Halifax and began teaching at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Fischl moved back to New York City in 1978 and began exhibiting extensively there in the late 1970s with his first solo exhibition in the city in 1979 at Edward Thorp Gallery. Fischl is a fellow at the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and his dark paintings of American life are in the public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
