BiographyCurry was a Regionalist painter and printmaker, famous for his depiction of life in his home state, Kansas. Born and raised in Kansas, Curry briefly attended the Kansas City Art Institute before transferring to the Art Institute of Chicago. He then attended Geneva College in Pennsylvania. He worked as an illustrator from 1921 through 1926, and then spent a year in Paris. He settled in New York and then in Westport, Connecticut. In 1936, he became the first artist in residence at the Agricultural College of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, a position supported by the WPA. He traveled throughout the state promoting art and teaching. In the 1930s he painted murals for the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka and the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. Curry is associated with the midwestern Regionalist movement, along with Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton.Person TypeIndividual
