Doris Lee

American painter and illustrator, 1905–1983
BiographyBorn in Illinois, Lee studied with the painter Ernest Lawson at the Kansas City Art Institute and attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. By the 1930s she had developed a whimsical realist style that translated into popular prints, illustrations, and a mural in the Main Post Office in Washington, D.C., produced under the auspices of the W.P.A. Her cheerful depictions of rural and small town life were published as lithographs by Associated American Artists. She taught at Michigan State University and the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center.
